2026 is Colt Keith’s third season in Major League Baseball with the Detroit Tigers, so it’s easy to forget that the player is still just 24 years old. The infielder is still learning and adapting, but has greatly improved his offense compared to 2025. Although the season is still in its infancy, Colt Keith can become a major offensive force for the Tigers.

Disciplined Approach Paying Dividends
Entering play on Sunday, April 19th, Keith sat in the 90th percentile in MLB for chase percentage, showing a mightily disciplined approach at the plate. He was hampered by a tendency to chase pitches outside of the zone during his first two seasons. However, Keith has clearly worked on this part of his game during the winter.
Keith finished in the 40th percentile for chase percentage in his 2024 season. That number ticked up to the 67th percentile last season. A big jump, but those numbers pale in comparison to the early-season numbers Colt Keith is putting up in Detroit.
The results of his off-season work are frighteningly good in other areas as well. He sits in the 98th percentile for Squared Up Percentage, 96th percentile for Average Exit Velo, and in the 95th percentile for Hard-Hit Percentage—all stats per Baseball Savant.
Colt Keith’s big moment for the Detroit Tigers of 2026 so far was a walk-off hit on April 16th against the Kansas City Royals. As has been typical of his hits in 2026, Keith got the barrel on the ball and hit it very hard, driving in Riley Greene from second.

High Average, Gap Power
Much like in his first two seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Colt Keith has been hitting for a high average but has struggled to find his home-run swing. However, Keith has been hitting doubles at a much higher clip in 2026 than in either his first- or second-year student campaigns.
Entering 2026, Colt Keith hit 37 doubles through 930 MLB At-Bats, averaging one every 25.14 ABs. Entering play on Sunday, Keith has hit seven doubles in 63 appearances, averaging one every nine ABs.
Unfortunately for both Colt Keith and the Detroit Tigers, he is waiting for his first big fly of 2026. Still, his .317 batting average has kept him at or near the top of the lineup. Keith’s .471 Expected Slug offers hope that the gap power is here to stay, and the home run power is not far away.
The infielder has thus far posted an OPS of .777, a small sample but also an improvement over the .746 he posted in 2025. If, and hopefully for Detroit when, Keith drives a few balls over the wall, that number will only grow, alongside his importance to the Tigers’ offense.
Looking forward for Colt Keith, Detroit Tigers
There is much to like about Colt Keith’s underlying stats, including his plate discipline and ability to hit the ball hard. Like many Tigers, he has sometimes struggled to find consistent playing time due to Manager AJ Hinch’s penchant for changing up the defense and batting order. Keith has popped up at first, second, and third base under Hinch’s guidance and gets reps at DH.
Continuing to hit the ball hard will keep Colt Keith in the Detroit Tigers lineup as the club chases an elusive AL Central title, and perhaps even a World Series. Players like Keith will have to step up, or continue to do so in this particular case. Pitching has been a real strength for Detroit in the early season, but the defense must be augmented by offense.
Colt Keith is trying to lead the charge with his bat, and so far, his patient approach has yielded positive results for the Detroit Tigers. If he adds power to his game, Keith could challenge for a Silver Slugger, as well as for a division title.
