White Sox to Retire World Series-Winning Manager’s Number

On August 8th, the Chicago White Sox will retire Ozzie Guillen‘s number 13 during a pregame ceremony. The announcement was made Friday during the White Sox’s home opener.

White Sox to Retire Guillen’s Number

Guillen was informed of the honor by the team’s pregame and postgame team after the top of the third inning. The group was joined by Scott Posednik, who read the announcement. Posednik played under Guillen in Chicago. Additionally, he hit a walk-off home run in Game 2 of the 2005 World Series.

Guillen’s White Sox Career

Guillen played for the White Sox from 1985-1997. In 2004, he took over the managerial job, a position he held until 2011. As the White Sox manager, Guillen went 678-617.

2005 World Series Championship

Guillen’s second season as Sox manager saw him lead the team to the a World Series championship. Furthermore, it was the organization’s first since 1917.

The White Sox dominated the postseason in 2005. Their championship run started by sweeping the defending-champion Boston Red Sox in the Division Series before beating the Los Angeles Angels in five games in the Championship Series. The loss to the Angels in the series was their only one of the postseason.

In the World Series, the White Sox played the Houston Astros, a team appearing in their first World Series. The games were close, but behind Guillen’s leadership and on-field heroics, the White Sox swept the Astros to win the title.

White Sox Retired Numbers

Guillen’s number 13 will join an elite list of individuals whose number has been retired by the organization:

Guillen’s number will be the 12th retired in team history. In addition, he will join Konerko and Bueherle as key members of the 2005-wining team.

Sox Fans to Celebrate Better Times

The White Sox are in the middle of a rebuild, so things are not always enjoyable for fans of the team. In spite of that, fans of the team will enjoy getting to celebrate a great run in franchise history. Rate Field should be sold out for that special night this August.
