After a 4-2 homestand to open the 2026 season, the St. Louis Cardinals head on the road for their first road trip. Their first road series takes them to Michigan to play the Detroit Tigers. The Cardinals hope to continue their successful start against a team with World Series aspirations. As the series approaches, let’s look at three storylines to keep an eye on.
Cardinals’ Storylines for the Detroit Series
First Elite Opponent of the Season
The Tigers are not the Cardinals’ first tough opponent. The Tampa Bay Rays always find a way to play competitive baseball. The New York Mets are another tough opponent, hoping to return to the postseason. However, the Tigers are the first team the Cardinals are playing with true World Series aspirations. Behind a strong rotation and a capable lineup, the Tigers are given strong odds by most sportsbooks to reach the Fall Classic.
For the rebuilding Cardinals, how will they look against such an elite team? Will they hold their own? Or will it be clear the Cardinals are miles behind the Tigers?
Nothing about this series is going to change the fact that the Cardinals are rebuilding, nor will it change the Tigers’ status as World Series contenders. However, it will still be interesting to see how the team performs.
Starting Pitching
Four of the five Cardinal starters made it to the end of the fifth inning during their first start. Matthew Liberatore managed to go six innings during his second start on Wednesday.
Michael McGreevy, Dustin May, and Kyle Leahy will take the mound for the Redbirds this weekend. Can they get deep into the game against a capable Detroit lineup? For McGreevy, he pitched six no-hit innings in his season debut last weekend. While expecting another no-hit performance may be a tall order, McGreevy and the other starters can do the team a great service by pitching into the sixth inning.
May was roughed up in his first start, going just four innings. Can he rebound and get more innings? For Leahy, his second-career start saw him pitch into the sixth. May should be counted on to get into the sixth. Hopefully, he can bounce back and give the Cardinals effective innings.
In a reasonable scenario, McGreevy and May pitch into the sixth and hopefully finish the inning. As for Leahy, there are some growing pains that come with someone new to the rotation. Five innings should be considered a success for now, but getting into the sixth would be great.
Something that plays into the pitching’s favor is that starters against the Tigers so far this season have been able to get into the sixth inning for the most part. This has not always been the case, but the Tigers have seen opposing starting pitching go deep in games. Perhaps the Cardinals can keep that trend alive.
Roster Depth
A scary incident occurred on Wednesday when shortstop Masyn Winn was involved in a car accident. Winn was taken to a local hospital, but the team reported he did not suffer any serious injuries. At this time, it is unknown if Winn will be available for the Detroit series or the road trip in general.
If Winn is unavailable, the Cardinals’ roster depth will be tested early in the season. Thomas Saggese and Jose Fermin will likely fill in at shortstop. The remainder of the lineup would be adjusted, with another hitter likely taking Winn’s place as the cleanup hitter.
The most important part of this storyline is that Winn is okay. Car accidents are scary. Cardinals’ fans still remember the Josh Hancock tragedy from 2007 and the Oscar Taveras tragedy in 2014. Thankfully, it appears Winn will be fine. From a baseball perspective, it does create an opportunity for players on the bench to step up.
If Winn is out of the lineup on Friday, both Fermin and Saggese will likely enter the lineup regardless of who plays shortstop. The Tigers are starting lefty Framber Valdez, so Cards’ manager Oli Marmol will likely want Saggese in left field in place of Nathan Church. If Winn does not play, then Fermin would get the nod at shortstop.
