Team Taiwan has wrapped up its 2026 World Baseball Classic action. They took the field in Japan, playing four games in the Tokyo Dome as part of Pool C, where they competed against Japan, Korea, Czechia, and Australia. Japan and Korea have both advanced, but Taiwan once again showed out in the biggest stage, going 2-2, winning in blowout fashion against Czechia and grinding out an extra-innings win against Korea, a historical rival. Yu Chang and team captain Chieh-Hsien Chen were the big names for Taiwan coming into the tournament, but it was former Cincinnati Red Stuart Fairchild that has endeared the hearts of the country after four games.
Fairchild’s Connection to Taiwan
Unlike the majority of Team Taiwan’s roster, Fairchild was not born and raised in Taiwan, and does not speak Mandarin or Taiwanese Hokkien (a Taiwanese dialect). He was born in Seattle, Washington, to his mother, Mimi Fairchild, and father, Todd Fairchild.
His mother, Mimi, was born in Taichung, Taiwan, and moved to the U.S in 1975 when she was four years old. His father, Todd Fairchild, was born in the U.S. Mimi has shared her connection to Taiwan, stating that she and Stuart have never truly discussed her Taiwanese background. Stuart knew that her mother was born in Taiwan, but that was the extent of it.
She shared how, upon receiving an invitation from team Taiwan to play in the 2026 WBC, she and Stuart discussed some of her background, and she expressed that she wanted to go back to her home country for the first time since moving as a little child. It was an opportunity of a lifetime for the Fairchild family, and Stuart took full advantage of it.
Stuart Fairchild’s WBC Performance
In Fairchild’s first taste of the WBC, he slashed .250/.438/.750 for a 1.188 OPS in 12 at-bats. He hit two home runs, drove in six, and drew four walks along with three stolen bases. It was an all-around performance for Fairchild, who has become a household name in Taiwan seemingly overnight.
Fairchild’s first home run was a grand slam against Czechia, and his second was a two-run home run to the opposite field late in the game against Korea to give Taiwan the 4-3 lead. While the bullpen blew the lead, Taiwan still came through in the tenth inning, winning it 5-4.
In the matter of about two weeks, Fairchild went from someone fans in Taiwan didn’t even know was half-Taiwanese to someone whom they adore and admire.
The Meaning of Fairchild’s WBC Appearance
Despite being eliminated in the first round of this year’s WBC, team Taiwan and Fairchild still gave the entire country multiple moments to remember.
Fairchild’s WBC story invoked a bigger story than simply an underdog player and team putting up a fight in a baseball tournament. It shows that it is never too late to connect to your culture and heritage. In Mimi’s case, her culture is foreign to her, but she received the opportunity to go back and reconnect after all these years.
Even if Fairchild didn’t dominate the tournament, the overarching message remains the same. The beauty of the WBC is to celebrate and share all of the beautiful countries around the world, showing once again how much this tournament means not only to the players but to all fans around the world.
Fairchild’s Reds Tenure
Fairchild has played for five teams in his five-year career so far, and is currently working his way to crack the Cleveland Guardians‘ opening day roster.
He spent parts of 2022, all of 2023, and all of 2024 with the Cincinnati Reds, where he served as a fourth outfielder, providing good defense, good base running, and some occasional offense.
