Report: Dodgers Claim Utility Infielder Off Waivers from Twins

The reigning World Champions’ calm offseason continues, but they keep adding to their depth. The Los Angeles Dodgers have claimed infielder Ryan Fitzgerald from the Minnesota Twins, according to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. The 31-year old, who was designated for assignment last week, can play multiple positions. He can fill in at second base, third base, and shortstop. This acquisition demonstrates once again that the Dodgers value versatility. Their 40-man roster is now full.

Report: Dodgers Claim Ryan Fitzgerald from Twins

Bye-Bye Blue Jay

This move by Los Angeles seems to indicate that the Dodgers may not land any more big-name free agents this winter. They did make one big splash, signing Edwin Díaz to a three-year deal worth $69 million. There was some speculation that they were interested in Bo Bichette. However, the free-agent shortstop is asking for a contract worth $300 million and has a meeting with the Philadelphia Phillies in the near future. The Dodgers may have deep pockets, but they are not willing to go that far.

Breaking into the Big Leagues

Fitzgerald was called up and made his major-league debut last year. He played all around the infield last season. In limited playing time of 24 games, he had a .196 batting average. The offensive production in the minor leagues is a bit, better as he hit above .270.

Musical Chairs?

Fitzgerald may provide insurance for an aging and injured infield. World Series hero Miguel Rojas is entering his final season and is a part-time player himself. Mookie Betts will need a day off occasionally from shortstop. Hyeseong Kim’s role is yet to be defined. More importantly, the Dodgers don’t appear interested in rushing Tommy Edman back from major ankle surgery.

It would be surprising if the Dodgers are done modifying the roster. A trade or two may be in the offing before spring training. However, the clock is indeed ticking.
