Blue Jays Strikeout Master Could Make MLB Debut

Adding star prospect Trey Yesavage to the roster for a September call-up would be a boost for the Toronto Blue Jays. Yesavage represents a bright future for the Blue Jays with a fresh arm in the rotation for 2026.

Blue Jays Yesavage Inching Closer to MLB debut

Yesavage’s Bright Future With Blue Jays

But having him make his debut this season will demonstrate what’s to come for next season. Yesavage should get a taste of big league baseball; he has been dominant on the mound and has made significant strides in his journey through the Blue Jays farm system.

He started off the season in Single-A  Dunedin and is now pitching in Triple-A. Rising quickly through the system, Yesavage is a 21-year-old who has advanced to Triple-A in his first season of professional baseball. Yesavage began this year with the Single-A Dunedin team.

He posted a 2.43 ERA across seven starts with 55 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings pitched. His performance earned him a promotion to the High-A Vancouver team. The success of Yesavage forced the hands of the Blue Jays to test him even further by promoting him to Triple-A Buffalo on Aug. 12.

Facing Adversity Early Has Allowed Him to Rebound

After a bumpy debut at Triple-A on Aug. 14, the 22-year-old right-hander had sported a 3.86 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 13:4 K: BB in 9.1 innings over his last two starts. The youngster has pitched at four levels in his first pro campaign, and the 2024 first-round pick could make it five if the Blue Jays give him a chance in the big leagues in the bullpen in September.

Overall, he has met his match. Across two starts, he has given up five earned runs on five hits across 6 1/3 innings pitched. His ERA is 4.91, which is a little higher than we are used to for Yesavage, along with 16 strikeouts

But Yesavage still has a few obstacles to overcome at Triple-A before he can make
his debut. He will need to prove he has what it takes to attack the strike zone on a reliable basis against big league hitters. This is where he’s showcased some downfalls when he’s made his way through the farm system. He issued 10 combined walks over his first three starts at high-A and 11 in his first five at double-A.
But he’s been able to bounce back and demonstrate his elite skills by hammering the strike zone. For example, his stint in New Hampshire showcased how the 6-foot-4 starter didn’t give up any walks across his final three outings while striking out practically half of the 47 batters at the plate.

Call to the Pen

Yesavage has the tools to provide depth for the Blue Jaya bullpen. It could potentially be the role suited for him, as the bullpen has showcased some struggles. This could be a great chance for him to showcase his strong attributes and why he will be a valuable asset for the Blue Jays down the stretch.
The Blue Jays would benefit from having a multi-inning reliever. They’ve turned to guys like Paxton Schultz, Eric Lauer (who’s become a key member of the rotation), Lazaro Estrada, José Ureña, and Easton Lucas. But they can’t compare with the hype and upside that Yesavage has showcased and can offer to the Blue Jays.
