The Phillies released struggling starter Joe Ross on Tuesday.

Phillies Release a Veteran Pitcher and Place One on Injured List

The Philadelphia Phillies have released pitcher Joe Ross and placed struggling pitcher Jordan Romano on the 15-day injured list with middle finger inflammation on his right hand. To fill the open 26-man roster spots, Daniel Robert has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and Lou Trivino has been added to the 40-man roster and promoted. This season, Trivino has pitched for the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers, and recently joined the Phillies organization on a minor league deal. Prior to this year, Trivino had not pitched in a major league game since 2022.

Phillies Release Joe Ross, Place Jordan Romano on Injured List

Ross has a 2-1 record with a 5.12 ERA in 37 outings this season. He also has a 4.86 FIP and a 2.17 K/BB rate, along with a 1.471 WHIP. Ross has a 1.41 HR/9 allowed rate and a 13.3% HR/FB allowed rate this season. This past offseason, the Phillies signed Ross to a one-year deal. They have now decided to move on. It is relatively surprising that Ross got released before Romano, given how abysmal a season the latter has had. Romano is probably not going to throw another pitch in a Phillies uniform, although this injured list stint is probably to delay the inevitable.

Immediate Bullpen Implications

Robert had a quietly good season going at one point. However, he allowed five runs across two innings of work in his two most recent major league outings. When Ross came back from the injured list, Robert went on the injured list himself. This season, Robert has a 5.79 ERA in 12 major league appearances. He also has a 5.90 FIP and a 1.50 K/BB rate, a 1.821 WHIP, a 1.93 HR/9 allowed rate, and a 20.0% HR/FB allowed rate. In his first 10 outings, Robert allowed one earned run across 9 1/3 innings.

Since joining the Phillies organization, Trivino has a 0.00 ERA in six minor league outings. He has a 2.81 FIP to go along with a 2.33 K/BB rate and a 1.143 WHIP in that span. In the major leagues this year, Trivino has a 3-1 record with a 4.42 ERA between a total of 37 outings with the Giants and Dodgers, including two starts. Trivino has a 5.03 FIP with a 2.23 K/BB rate and a 1.371 WHIP in the majors this season. With Trivino coming up and taking the spot previously held by Ross on the 40-man roster, it remains full.
