Luis Guerrero and Nate Eaton are being added to the Red Sox roster

Red Sox Roster Shakeup Coming with Two Roster Moves

No, it’s not the number one prospect in baseball, Roman Anthony coming up. Instead, it’s a couple of smaller moves for the Boston Red Sox ahead of their series finale on Sunday with the Atlanta Braves. The Red Sox are poised to have multiple shifting pieces this coming week. Chris Cotillo of MassLive and Chris Henrique of Boston Sports Journal were the first to share the news of the incoming call-ups. Those moves are the Red Sox recalling RHP Luis Guerrero, and selecting the contract of utilityman Nate Eaton.

Red Sox Roster to Add Nate Eaton

Eaton, 28, made his MLB debut with the Kansas City Royals in 2022. He signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox this past offseason after failing to live up to expectations during his time with the Royals. This year at Triple-A Worcester, Eaton is hitting .277 with a .811 OPS, including five home runs.

For Eaton, this could be a short run with the Red Sox. It’s been reported that Romy Gonzalez could be active as soon as Monday. With the Red Sox facing a few lefties in the upcoming schedule, having an extra right-handed bat might also be worth it for the Sox.

A Lot of Roster Movement Incoming

It’s hard to parse exactly what the roster moves might be. Both the 40-man roster and the active roster are at capacity. This means at least two moves are incoming, and one is to clear a 40-man spot.

There are some avenues the Red Sox can take, and some that are more apparent than others. Depending on the severity of the injuries to Liam Hendriks or Tanner Houck, the team may opt to place one of them on the 60-day injured list, thereby opening up a 40-man roster slot. Alex Bregman could also be a candidate to move to the 60-day injured list if the timetable for his return becomes clearer.

Some fans speculate that it could be the end of the line for Trevor Story, but with the injury bug hitting the big league club, it’s hard to see it coming to fruition. The Red Sox owe Story $55 million beyond this season.

RHP Luis Guerrero Back in the Big Leagues

Guerrero, 24, is also coming back to the Red Sox roster. The timing of this adds a wrinkle. A player cannot return from the minor leagues until 15 days have passed unless they’re replacing an injured player. Guerrero was last with the big club during their series with Baltimore just last weekend.

That likely means at least one player is headed to the IL. RHP Justin Slaten hasn’t been used since May 28th, so he may be dealing with a potential injury.

Whatever the Red Sox roster moves end up being, this team needs a jolt. Since officially losing Bregman to injury, they’re 26th in MLB in runs scored. They’ve gone 2-6 to drop to a 28-32 record. A once-promising season might just be slipping away for the Red Sox. They’ll need all the help they can get to get back into it.
