Blue Jays Make Several Roster Moves, Schultz Has Historic Debut

The Toronto Blue Jays made several roster moves on Sunday, one of which was placing reliever Nick Sandlin on the 15-day injury list. Sandlin has been dealing with a right lat strain for some time but has been managing it. Manager John Schneider felt it was best to shutdown Sandlin from throwing before the injury escalated. While not a severe injury, Sandlin’s absence will be a hit to the Blue Jays bullpen.

The Blue Jays also called up Dillon Tate and Paxton Schultz, and both pitched in the Blue Jays loss to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Jacob Barnes was designated for assignment as a result of his poor performance on Saturday, coughing up four earned runs on a grand slam in the 12th inning against the Mariners. Notably, Schultz pitched brilliantly in his major league debut. He tied a major league record for relivers in a debut with eight strikeouts. In 4 1/3 innings of work, he surrendered two hits without giving up a walk or a run.

What a debut 👏

The 28-year-old Sandlin has recorded a 2.25 ERA with 10 strikeouts as a valuable depth reliever. He’s provided key contributions with strong performances early this season. It has demonstrated his ability to contribute as a middle reliever. Sandlin is a big part of the bullpen, but the Blue Jays will have to make do for a little while without the swing and miss reliever. But luckily the Blue Jays will soon be getting two pieces of their bullpen back in Erik Swanson and Ryan Burr.

In Sandlin’s outing on Saturday he provided the Blue Jays with a scoreless eigth inning and two strikeouts. He was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in the Andrés Giménez trade, and both have been success stories in Toronto early on.
