In a recent survey from ESPN, 18 MLB executives and baseball insiders shared their thoughts on the future of two of the league’s most prominent stars: Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman. The results were intriguing, with nearly split decisions on whether Alonso or Bregman will stay with their current teams or move on to greener pastures. The survey offers a unique glimpse into the minds of those who shape the league’s roster decisions, providing insight into the complex factors that influence player movement.
Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman’s Futures Predicted
Alonso’s Future
When asked about Alonso’s future, it was almost an evenly divided choice. Ten respondents believed the first baseman will stay with the New York Mets, while eight predicted he would leave. One executive who expects Alonso to stay noted that his attachment to the team and city grew stronger during the Mets’ unexpected postseason run. However, another executive pointed out that New York’s current payroll allotment for next is significantly lower than the previous year’s, which could impact the team’s negotiations. Despite the uncertainty, some executives believe Alonso’s loyalty to his current team will win out.
As one respondent put it, “I think the playoffs did the trick for him. I’m not sure he’ll get a better deal than from his current team.”
Bregman’s Future
In contrast, the executives were slightly more convinced that Bregman would leave his current team. Eleven respondents predicted his departure, while seven believed he would stay. One executive attributed the third baseman’s potential departure to his valuable experience and leadership, which could be attractive to other teams. As the executive noted, “Other teams need his bat and battle-tested vet presence more than his current team does.”
While the majority of executives believe the third baseman will leave, there is still some uncertainty surrounding his future. On Monday, Astros owner Jim Crane provided a cautious update, stating there’s “nothing to report yet” on negotiations with Alex Bregman. General manager Dana Brown has been handling conversations with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras. Crane acknowledged that the Astros have started exploring backup options, as reported by The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, in case Bregman decides to sign elsewhere.
Only time will tell if these predictions come fruition. The survey’s findings provide a fascinating glimpse into the minds of MLB executives and insiders. As the offseason unfolds, fans will be eagerly watching to see if these predictions become reality.
