Top Young Talent Joins Yankees Active Roster

The New York Yankees begin a crucial series against the Kansas City Royals. New York is in a close race with the Baltimore Orioles for the American League East title. However, the Yankees are looking to spruce things up a little. Days after general manager Brian Cashman said Alex Verdugo in left field gives them the best chance to win, top prospect Jasson Domínguez will come up to the majors. Infielder DJ LeMahieu was on the injured list with a hip impingement. Outfielder Jon Berti was also recalled and reliever Anthony Misiewicz was designated for assignment.

SNY’s Andy Martino reported that Domínguez will play “just about every day” for New York. Dominugez will play in center field and hit sixth Monday against the Kansas City Royals.

Yankees Recall Top Prospect Jasson Domínguez

Domínguez, 21, made his MLB debut a year ago. He appeared in eight games as the Yankees center fielder before he tore his UCL and required Tommy John surgery. Domínguez was healthy to return from the injured list in June, but spent time in Triple-A instead of the active roster. The Yankees wanted to give their top prospect regular reps with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The recent call-up doesn’t mean Domínguez will take over playing time from Alex Verdugo. The Yankees only managed six runs in the three game series against the Chicago Cubs. However, New York needs the offense now if they want to keep up with the Orioles for the AL East title.

Verdugo, 28, was acquried from the Boston Red Sox this past offseason. He is hitting .239/.295/.359 in 137 games. That includes his .302/.333/.326 batting line over the past two weeks. In 44 Triple-A games, Domínguez was hitting .314/.376/.504 with 11 home runs and 16 stolen bases. Although, Domínguez was already promoted this season and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. The Yankees have 19 games remaining and hold a half-game lead over the Orioles.
