White Sox Part Ways with Former Top Prospect

Before Monday’s series finale against the Detroit Tigers, the Chicago White Sox announced that third baseman Nick Senzel has been designated for assignment. Senzel, 29, is the corresponding move after the White Sox claimed infielder Jacon Amaya off waivers from the Houston Astros on the weekend. The White Sox recalled left-hander Sammy Peralta and optioned fellow left-hander Ky Bush. Senzel was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals on July 6 and released five days later. He appeared in 64 games for Washington, hitting .209 with seven home runs and 18 RBI.

Nick Senzel Loses 40-man Roster Spot

The former No. 2 overall pick looked like he might move into a more prominent role for the White Sox after the trade deadline. However, Paul DeJong is not on the roster, and the club has focused on Lenyn Sosa over Senzel for the open spot in the infield. Senzel went 3-for-30 with one double in ten games for Chicago after signing as a free agent on July 17. The one-time top prospect hasn’t met expectations on either side of the ball over his five-plus MLB seasons. Injuries played a role in diminishing his value and playing time, never topping 420 plate appearances in a season due to knee and toe issues.

The Cincinnati Reds moved him around on the field without much success. After the Reds non-tenderized Senzel last offseason, he landed on a one-year, $2 million deal with the Washington Nationals. Washington moved him back to third base, hoping for a more durable defensive setup. However, he opened the season on the injured list with a broken right thumb he sustained in spring training. The Nationals decided to turn their attention to rookie Trey Liscomb following Senzel’s dismal .209/.303/.359 batting line.

For his career, Senzel is hitting .232/.299/.363 with 40 home runs and 143 RBI in 1,633 plate appearances.
