Outfielder-Turned-Pitcher Gets Second Chance with Big League Call Up

The Cleveland Guardians made an interesting roster move. Per Mandy Bell of MLB.com, left-hander Anthony Gose will be on the roster with Logan Allen optioned in a corresponding move. Right-hander Xzavion Curry was designated for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot for Gose. Gose, 33, has had an interesting career path who was originally a second-round pick in the 2008 MLB Draft. He eventually became a top prospect as an outfielder before he was traded multiple times in the early part of his career.

Guardians Promote Anthony Gose

Gose never got the chance to establish himself as an everyday major leaguer. Between the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers, Gose batted .240/.309/.348 in 1,252 plate appearances. It wasn’t until 2017 that Gose transitioned to the mound. By 2018, Gose was a full-time pitcher in the Texas Rangers minor league system, eventually landing with Cleveland in a minor league trade in 2019. Gose spent multiple seasons working with the Guardians’ pitching development program, focusing on his mound skills and returning to the majors in 2021.

From 2021-22, Gose posted a 3.90 ERA while pitching 27 2/3 innings. Gose averages 98 mph on his four-seam fastball, topping 100 mph at any given time. He returned in 2022, posting a 4.71 ERA in 21 innings. However, he was out in July due to Tommy John surgery. He inked a two-year minor league contract to return to the Guardians that offseason but missed the 2023 season recovering from the surgery. After missing more than a year of activity, Gose earned a roster spot with Triple-A Columbus. This season, he has been healthy, throwing 38 1/3 innings with a 3.29 ERA with Columbus.

With Sam Hentges on the injured list, this gives the Guardians a second left-handed option alongside Tim Herrin in what has been the best bullpen in baseball this season. Cleveland’s bullpen ranks first in the American League in ERA (2.65), saves (36) and strikeouts (455).
