Yankees Veteran Slugger Returns to Lineup for Series Against Phillies

The New York Yankees will activate Giancarlo Stanton from the 10-day injured list Monday. Stanton has missed a month due to a left hamstring strain but appears set to make his return to the lineup in Philadelphia. The 34-year-old will skip a rehab assignment, and he’ll attempt to pick up where he left off with the Yankees, having produced a ten-game hitting streak prior to the injury. New York opted to designate Jahmai Jones for assignment to free up a roster for Stanton.

Giancarlo Stanton Off IL, Yankees Drop Infielder for Roster Spot

The Yankees lineup will add a big bat for the second day in a raw. A day after Jazz Chisholm Jr. debuted Sunday, Stanton is expected to be in the lineup. Manager Aaron Boone indicated to reporters that the club will be cautious with Stanton, who has a long history of lower body injuries throughout his career. Stanton has played in 419 games dating back to Opening Day 2019. However, the veteran’s production in 69 games this season is what the Yankees were hoping for, hitting .246/.302/.492 with 18 home runs. During Stanton’s absence, Aaron Judge took over at DH, giving Trent Grisham more playing time in the outfield.

New York could use the boost of Stanton’s bat as they enter the week with an 8-13 record for July. The Yankees, who led the American League East by 1 1/2 games the last time Stanton played, now trail the Baltimore Orioles by one game. With Chisholm and Stanton on the roster, Brian Cashman and the Yankee brass will look to add more ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. There are many appealing options for New York, especially with the need for an upgrade at third base.
