Chicago Cubs Reportedly Open to Trading Veteran Starter

The Chicago Cubs are reportedly open to trading right-handed starting pitcher Jameson Taillon, according to 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine. Levine broke the news earlier today on “Inside the Clubhouse” on 670 The Score. The news comes after MLB insider Bob Nightengale joined Foul Territory yesterday and said that the Boston Red Sox could have an interest in Taillon.

Jameson Taillon at Center of Newest Cubs Trade Rumor

With the Cubs still on the bubble as the July 30 trade deadline rapidly approaches, Taillon is a name that has been mentioned recently as a potential trade chip for Chicago. There will always be teams looking to buy starting pitching at the deadline for the stretch run. The Red Sox could be one of those teams, as they currently hold a Wild Card spot. Boston has gotten strong performances from its starting rotation this season. However, they could use another starter with Garrett Whitlock out for the season.

Taillon, 32, is in his second season with the Cubs after they signed him to a four-year, $68 million deal in 2022. Last season was rocky for the veteran as he went 8-10 with a bloated 4.84 ERA. However, this season has been quite the turnaround. In 16 starts, Taillon is 7-4 with a 3.10 ERA, providing steady consistency to the starting rotation. Taillon’s resurgence this season has made him a realistic trade chip for the Cubs.

Cubs Entering Decisive Week Leading Up to Deadline

The Cubs entered the All-Star break red-hot, winning three straight series and playing their best baseball to date. But yesterday’s loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks was more reminiscent of the Cubs we’ve seen most of this season. That version of the Cubs is highlighted by the inability to score runs or string together hits. If the Cubs are going to be serious contenders, the results of the next week will likely determine who or if the Cubs trade at the deadline.
