Twins to Place Prominent Third Baseman on 10-Day Injured List

Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters that the club will place third baseman Jose Miranda on the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday’s game. Utilityman Diego Castillo will come up from Triple-A St. Paul to take Miranda’s spot on the roster. The Twins must make another move to clear space on the 40-man roster. Miranda has been out with lower back tightness since Wednesday, allowing the Twins to backdate his IL stint to July 11. Even with the All-Star break coming up, the Twins will be careful with Miranda who has been a dominant force on offense.

Twins’ Jose Miranda: Heading to IL

It’s been a big year for Miranda. His 12 consecutive at-bats with a hit, matched a Major League record. He’s hitting .325/.366/.522 with nine home runs, 43 RBI, 35 runs and two stolen bases. His below-average 5.1 percent walk rate compliments his 13.4 percent strikeout rate which is in the 93rd percentile of all batters. However, beyond Miranda’s absence are more infield injuries. He joins Royce Lewis, Kyle Farmer, Alex Kirilloff and Austin Martin, who are all on the 10-day IL.

Minnesota had to get creative with the lineup, moving catcher Christian Vázquez to third base while Jair Camargo was called up from Triple-A earlier in the week. The Twins have some flexibility behind the plate with Vásquez, Camargo and Ryan Jeffers.

As for Castillo, he has played five different positions which will add some versatility to the mix. The 26-year-old debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, hitting .206/.251/.382 in his rookie season. He was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks during the offseason and appeared in one MLB game in 2023. After a few waiver claims, Castillo finally found a home with Minnesota through a trade with the Baltimore Orioles. Castillo is hitting .269/.375/.399 with five home runs and seven stolen bases with St. Paul.
