Pirates Lose Talented Young Right-Hander to 15-day Injured List

One of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ young arms will be out until after the All-Star break. They placed Jared Jones on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a strained right lat, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

“He’s got a little right lat strain going on, so we divided to get him out,” manager Derek Shelton said.

The injury caused Jones to be removed early from Wednesday’s start against the St. Louis Cardinal. It doesn’t appear to be a significant strain, but the Pirates will undoubtedly exercise caution with the talented young right-hander. Outfielder Josh Palacios was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Palacios, who hit .239 with 10 home runs in 91 games in 2023, is hitting .298 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 30 games across three minor league levels this season.

Jared Jones Goes on Injured List

Jones skipped a start in the rotation to hold his innings count down. He gave up one run in five innings during Pittsburgh’s 5-4 extra innings victory. Jones said after the game he wasn’t concerned about the severity of a potential injury, saying it would have been “really stupid” to keep pitching.

“I kinda felt it later in the game,” Jones said. “Kinda just got really tight on me in the fifth inning there. I told him and, yeah, here we are.”

Jones formed a fantastic rookie tandem with Paul Skenes in the rotation and has gone 5-6 with a 3.56 ERA in 16 starts. He has 98 strikeouts to just 27 walks in 91 innings this season. Jones has allowed more than three runs only twice. One of those starts came against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

The Pirates will take on the Cardinals on Thursday for the series finale. They will finish up their current homestand over the weekend with a four-game set against the New York Mets.
