White Sox Win Tight One over Rangers

White Sox Rangers

White Sox 2, Rangers 1

ARLINGTON, Texas, Aug 5 — The Chicago White Sox took the second game in their series of four against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on Friday evening by a final score of 2–1. With this win, the Rangers and White Sox are even in this series with one win apiece. An RBI single by Adolis Garcia provided the only offense on the night for the Rangers in this low-scoring affair. The third game in this four-game series is set for Saturday evening. Right-hander Michael Kopech (4–7, 3.12 ERA) will take the mound for the White Sox. Dane Dunning (1–6, 4.30 ERA) will get the ball for the Rangers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM Central.

Rangers’ Early Scoring Continues

The White Sox and Rangers only managed to score three runs combined in this contest. For the third time in a week, the Rangers got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Rangers right-fielder Adolis Garcia drove in catcher Jonah Heim with an RBI single to right field. Garcia is hitting .244 at the moment, so any number of hits that he is able to string together is a welcomed site. The White Sox would eventually tie the game 1–1 in the top of the third inning. This happened on a sacrifice fly by catcher Seby Zavala. Chicago DH Yasmani Grandal was able to score on the play. The White Sox got a 2–1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, thanks to a solo home run by Eloy Jimenez off Rangers starting pitcher Glenn Otto. That’s all the offense they would need to secure the win.

Pitching Notes

Right-hander Glenn Otto started this game for the Rangers. Otto pitched well over the course of six innings. He suffered his team-high eighth loss (now 4–8, with an ERA of 5.31) despite allowing just two runs (both earned) on four hits and one walk over a career high-tying six innings. He has done this four times. The last time was July 17 against the Seattle Mariners. This was also his fourth quality start of the campaign, and he matched another career high with seven strikeouts as his 13 swing-and-miss strikes induced were the second most of his career (15 on April 22 against the Oakland Athletics). Right-hander Josh Sborz came on in relief of Otto in the top of the seventh inning.

Help out of the Pen

Sborz pitched two innings, and gave up only two hits. He also had three strikeouts on the evening. On a rare night in which the Rangers used only three pitchers in a game, right-hander Jose Leclerc was the last one out of the bullpen. Leclerc pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Rangers. He also had two strikeouts in his outing. White Sox starter Dylan Cease got the win against the Rangers on Friday night.

He pitched six innings, in which he gave up two hits on one run. That run was earned. Cease gave up no home runs in his outing. He also walked three, and struck out five. This was the tenth quality start of the season for Cease. Righty Liam Hendriks got the save for the White Sox. He pitched the ninth inning, and struck out two batters. It was the 22nd save of the season for Hendriks.
