The 2022 MLB Draft is coming very soon, so it is time to start breaking down some of the top draft prospects. The talent in both the high school and college ranks is again impressive. One of the most well-rounded players from the college ranks this year is Tennessee star, Jordan Beck. Beck is the 22nd-best draft prospect, according to MLB.com. Here is a 2022 MLB Draft profile on Beck.
Strengths
Beck is among the most well-rounded players in the draft, as his scouting grades are average or above-average in all categories. On the 20-80 scale, his hit tool is a 50, power is a 55, run is a 55, arm is a 60, and fielding is a 55.
From an offensive perspective, Beck’s best tool is his power. The 21-year-old has good bat speed and strength. He can use his 6’3″ 225-pound frame to create above-average raw power in all fields. In his 149 career college games, Beck had a .553 slugging percentage with 75 extra-base hits. Overall, in his college career, Beck slashed .284/.366/.553 with 34 home runs and 14 stolen bases.
Beck’s greatest tool, from a defensive perspective, is his plus arm strength. The Tennessee right fielder is an above-average defender, and his arm profiles well in right field. Beck also runs well, and scouts say he could potentially make a move to center field. However, he is a strong right fielder, so his current spot on the corner may be where he stays.
Weaknesses
Despite being a well-rounded player, Beck does have a weakness in his game. His biggest weakness is his occasional over-aggressiveness at the plate. His aggressiveness has made him vulnerable to breaking balls and changeups at times. In the Cape Cod league last summer, Beck struggled to make contact and hit the ball with authority with a wood bat. However, Beck made some adjustments this past season at Tennessee. He had a more disciplined approach, and he adjusted to breaking balls. Beck still occasionally had moments of over-aggressiveness this season, but his system improved. Beck’s improvements have made him a first-round talent going into draft season.
Tennessee was the biggest villain in college baseball, cemented by Beck’s actions against Georgia Tech in the Regional. Beck hit a game-tying double against Georgia Tech and raised his middle finger towards the outfield as he was rounding first. Whether this moment reflects a maturity issue or just a bad moment, it was a horrible look and a potential weakness of Beck.

MLB Player Comparison
Most scouts and evaluators will agree that Beck’s best MLB player comparison is Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Hunter Renfroe. Both are right-handed hitters with similar physical builds and strengths. They have strong arms, good defence in the right field, and well-above-average power. Coincidentally, Beck and Renfroe were drafted by the Boston Red Sox out of high school before choosing a college.
MLB Draft season is when dreams come true. The 2022 MLB Draft begins on July 17 and runs through July 19. With the improvements Jordan Beck made at the plate this year, he is a first-round talent. It means that Beck’s dreams will come true on July 17.
