It may be hard to believe, but there is only one month remaining in the 2021 MLB regular season. The end of this long marathon is quickly approaching. The postseason picture is starting to become clearer and clearer every day. However, a lot can happen in one month, especially in Major League Baseball. The Houston Astros enter Friday sitting atop the AL West, coming in with a 78-55 record. They lead the Oakland Athletics by four and a half games–a solid, but not quite comfortable lead. With just one month left of the 2021 season, here is a breakdown of the Astros remaining schedule.
Sep. 3-5 at Padres
Beginning Friday, Houston is facing the playoff-hopeful San Diego Padres. This series is one of the more fascinating series this weekend. It is also one of the most difficult on the Astros remaining schedule. Houston has just five series left against teams currently over .500. San Diego is 4-6 over their last ten games but that’s not going to stop them from battling in this series.
Sep. 6-8 vs. Mariners
Immediately following Houston’s series in San Diego, the Astros will face another team above .500, the Seattle Mariners. The Astros will be looking for their revenge after being shutout in the final two games of their previous series. This is the last time the two division foes will meet this season.
Sep. 10-12 vs. Angels
This series against the Los Angeles Angels will kickoff a span of 17 straight games without a day off. The Angels have hovered around .500 all year but they are always very competitive.
Sep. 13-16 at Rangers
This series against the Texas Rangers is one of two four-game series the Astros have left. It is also the final time these two division opponents see each other this season. Taking at least three of four against the team at the bottom of the AL West would certainly help with Houston’s quest to maintain their division lead over Oakland.
Sep. 17-19 vs. Diamondbacks
This series against the Arizona Diamondbacks is the only remaining set against a National League opponent. Arizona has been one of the worst road baseball teams in the league. However, they will have plenty of young talent looking to prove themselves against one of the better teams in the AL.
Sep. 20-23 at Angels
This is the last four-game series that Houston has left. It is also the last time these two teams will face off in 2021. After these four games, the Astros will have only two series against division rivals, and they will both be against the aforementioned A’s.
Sep. 24-26 at A’s
The final three series of the Astros remaining schedule will not be easy. All three series are against teams currently above .500. They begin their final week and a half against the A’s, the team that has been on their heels all season long. This is the last road series of the season.
Sep. 28-30 vs. Rays
After a well-deserved day off, the Astros have to face the team currently at the top of the AL: the Tampa Bay Rays. It could potentially be a postseason preview.
Oct. 1-3 vs. A’s
The final series of the Astros 2021 regular season will come against their rivals: the A’s. It is completely possible that the AL West division crown could come down to this final series of the season. If so, the drama could be outstanding.
The last nine games of the season will be quite the gauntlet, but it should lock Houston in as they will likely be preparing for the postseason.
