New York Mets Make Front Office Changes

New York Mets

The new owner of the New York Mets, Steve Cohen has made several moves in the front office. General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen and executives Allard Baird, Omar Minaya, Adam Guttridge, and Jared Banner have all been relieved of their duties.

Sandy Alderson, who is the new President of Baseball Operations will now have to replace the whole front office. There is no word on the job status of current Mets manager Luis Rojas. Alderson does have a relationship with Rojas which could indicate that Rojas will remain the Mets manager.

Brodie Van Wagenen

For Brodie Van Wagenen he was given just two years to prove he could run an entire baseball organization. The firing of Van Wagenen was not unexpected since Cohen and Alderson did not hire him and he was definitely a Wilpon hire. Fred Wilpon hired Van Wagenen while he was still an agent who had never worked in a baseball organization before. This offseason will be pivotal for this franchise and Alderson reportedly wanted a clean state when he took over.

Clean Slate for Alderson

Sandy Alderson begins his second term running the New York Mets. Alderson stepped down in 2018 as he battled cancer. Steve Cohen’s first move as the owner of the Mets was to hire Alderson to run the show. Alderson knows the organization inside and out. He has relationships with a lot of the current Mets. His son Bryn runs the scouting department for the Mets.

Steve Cohen also knows this organization. He was a minority owner of the New York Mets since 2012. There a lot of front office hires the Mets have to make. But the expectation is that agents will wait until Cohen and Alderson have built their staff. Cohen is the richest owner in the sport and the top free agents in baseball, who all fit what the Mets need, are expected to wait until the new owner has his front office in place to sign contracts.
