Once again, the Houston Astros find themselves with more tough injury news. Houston has battled injuries all season, especially among the Astros pitchers. Unfortunately, this week has been no different. Houston placed three pitchers on the Injured List: Lance McCullers Jr. Chris Devenski, and Blake Taylor. These losses are another blow to an already beleaguered pitching staff.
McCullers hit the IL because of what the team described as neck nerve irritation. The move is retroactive to Saturday, September 5. The team recalled lefty, Cionel Perez, from the taxi squad to fill his spot on the active roster. McCullers had a 5.79 ERA in 37 innings prior to being placed on the IL.
Fresh off the IL, Devenski has unfortunately found his way right back on that dreaded list. The righty reliever had a 35 day stay on the IL before being activated late last week. He was on that list due to elbow soreness, and it appears it is the same issue now. The team recalled young righthander, Humberto Castellanos, to fill his spot on the active roster. Devenski has pitched 3 and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs in those innings.
Taylor’s absence is perhaps the biggest blow of them all. The rookie lefty had been one of best Astros pitchers, in an otherwise inconsistent bullpen. The 24-year-old had pitched 17 innings, giving up just four earned runs. The team recalled right-hander, Chase De Jong, to fill Taylor’s spot on the active roster.
Bregman Returns
It’s not all bad news however, as Alex Bregman came off the IL Tuesday. A hamstring injury kept the superstar off the field since August 20. Bregman’s return will be a welcome sight for an Astros team that is reeling. The team came into Tuesday with a five-game losing streak where they have been outscored 38-25. In 24 games before the injury, Bregman had an OPS of .874 and 13 extra-base hits.
