Orioles Trey Mancini Has Colon Cancer

Trey Mancini

If the COVID-19 pandemic was already bad enough, try going through all of it while fighting off colon cancer. That is exactly what Baltimore Orioles star Trey Mancini is going through with stage three colon cancer. It’s a blow that has the slugger himself thinking that he may not play in 2020 even if the season resumes.

My treatment will take six months-every two weeks for six months,” Mancini said a letter piece for the Players Tribune. “If baseball returns in 2020, it will probably be without me.”

Originally diagnosed back in March, Mancini had a malignant tumor removed and the treatment is currently underway. The origins of diagnosis began back in spring training when blood tests showed he had low iron levels. From there it only progressed, and ultimately landed Mancini to follow his father who had stage two colon cancer at age 58. Initially, the thought was that Trey Mancini might have celiac disease or a stomach ulcer before the official cancer diagnosis came through.

After the NBA and NHL put a pause in their respective seasons due to the coronavirus outbreak, MLB followed suit. The league shut down spring training and thus the original start date of March 26 came and went without a regular-season start. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone in the world of baseball and for Mancini, it meant having to go to chemotherapy treatments alone.

A Big Blow For the Orioles

Should the 2020 season resume, the Baltimore Orioles would be without one of their best players. The four-year star enjoyed one of his best years in 2019. He hit .291 with personal bests in RBI (97), home runs (35), and runs scored (106). Overall his short career has had strong points including his rookie season in 2017. It was then when he finished third in the American League Rookie of the Year voting that season and helped blossom a strong young career.

This is a blow that would hurt any team but for the Orioles, who finished with the second-worst record last season. That included just 54 wins, matching what tumultuous season had by the Orioles franchise back in 1988. It also marked one of the worst winning marks over the past ten seasons. Without the help of arguably their best player, things aren’t looking great for baseball in the city of Baltimore.
