Chicago White Sox Announce Sad News

The Chicago White Sox announced some devastating news this morning related to Ed Farmer. Chicago announced the news in the tweet below on the team’s Twitter account.

Ed Farmer was an icon for the franchise. Farmer helped bring about the brand of White Sox baseball on the Southside of Chicago and helped the team to really form an identity. In addition, if it weren’t for Ed Farmer the White Sox might not have had some of the national recognition that they have received. Farmer became an announcer with the team in 1992. Originally, Farmer was a radio analyst before becoming the play-by-play man in 2006.

Pitching Career to Go Along with Radio

Besides being the voice of the White Sox, Ed Farmer was a pitcher in the big leagues. Farmer spent 11 seasons in the majors spending time with various teams. Over his career, Farmer pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, and Milwaukee Brewers.

Over the span of those 11 seasons, Farmer posted a 4.30 ERA over 624 innings of work. Primarily used as a reliever, Farmer did make 21 starts over the span of his big league career. Additionally, during his career Farmer recorded a 4.16 fielding independent percentage (FIP), 1.53 WHIP, and a K/9 rate of 5.7.

The most iconic moment of Farmer’s big league career occurred during the 1980 regular season. That year Farmer received his first and only All-Star nomination as a member of the Chicago White Sox pitching staff. The game took place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Gone but Not Forgotten

Ed Farmer might be gone, but the impact he left behind in the radio world will never be forgotten. Given that Farmer spent nearly 30 years in the radio booth, he touched the lives of many people around the game. For more on that, just look at the tweet above and you can understand how people around the game viewed him.

Furthermore, with the time Farmer spent in the radio booth he gained a lot of baseball knowledge. That knowledge was evident in every game that he called and with the information that he passed down to White Sox fans. It’s likely something White Sox fans will never forget.

Ed Farmer, you might be gone but you will never be forgotten in the game of baseball.
