Domingo Leyba Suspended
The Arizona Diamondbacks and MLB announced that infielder Domingo Leyba has been suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing drug.
The substance is knows as boldenone and it is a performance-enhancing anabolic steroid. Veterinarians use it mostly on horses.
Top Prospect
Leyba is one of the Diamondbacks top prospects. He has played second, short, and third. The 24-year-old has shown excellent hands with good range and a solid, accurate arm. Leyba had four hits in 16 at-bats with a home run in Spring Training. He was competing for a spot as utility infielder.
Leyba spent most of the 2019 season with Triple-A Reno. He appeared in 112 games, batting .300 with 137 hits, 37 doubles, 19 home runs, and 77 RBI.
MLB Debut in 2019
The Diamondbacks called Leyba up on three different occasions, and he made his MLB debut on June 22, 2019 against the San Francisco Giants. He picked up his first hit on the same day, a pinch-hit single off of Mark Melancon. For the Diamondbacks he hit .280 with seven hits, including two doubles and a triple.
Leyba will not receive a salary. His suspension will create an opening on the 40-man roster. The team has not determined if he will remain in camp in the interim.
Domingo Leyba is now the fifth player suspended this year under the MLB program. Houston Astros pitcher Francis Martes, Pittsburgh Pirates utility player Pablo Reyes, Colorado Rockies pitcher Justin Lawrence, and free agent pitcher Victor Alcantara are the others.
