MLB Free Agent Signings

As Spring Training begins there are still several MLB free agents looking for work. These players while solid are not superstars and all were signed to low salaries. For MLB teams this is like shopping at the bargain bin. This has been a common occurrence in the last few offseasons.

Brad Miller

Brad Miller signed a one year contract for two million dollars with the St. Louis Cardinals. The seven-year veteran split the 2019 season with the Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Phillies. Miller’s slash line was .260/.329/.565 with 13 HR and 25 RBI.

In 2016 Miller hit 30 HR and drove in 81 RBI. That was the highwater mark for Miller. Miller has turned himself into a useful utility player who last season played second base, third base and left field.

Cameron Maybin

Cameron Maybin signed a one year contract for 1.5 million dollars with the Detroit Tigers. Maybin can earn up to 2.8 million dollars with bonuses. The one-time mega prospect had one of the best years of his 13-year career in 2019. Maybin hit a career high in HR with 11 and drove in 32 runs for the New York Yankees.

Maybin’s slash line last season was .285/.364/.494. The Yankees brought in Maybin after the injury bug bit them hard. Maybin’s play was a huge reason the Yankees were able to overcome the injury bug. Maybin returns to Motown for his third stint as a Tiger.

Jarrod Dyson

Jarrod Dyson has signed a one year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth two million dollars. Dyson is still recognized as one of the best defensive centerfielders in MLB. However, his offensive numbers lead a lot to be desired.

Dyson’s career slash line is .247/.319/.338 and he has 250 career stolen bases. Last season as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks Dyson’s OBP was nearly 100 points higher than his batting average. The Pirates are in a complete rebuild mode. While Dyson is not part of their future he will solidify center field for a season and could also be traded if a team needs an outfielder down the stretch.

Trevor Cahill

Trevor Cahill signs a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants with an invitation to Spring Training. Cahill will earn two million dollars if he makes the team. He could earn another two million dollars in performance bonuses.

With a roster full of players over 30 years old and who are making a lot of money, it’s fair to wonder when the Giants fully tear it down and rebuild. After all the Giants have literally no chance to compete for the division in 2020. With that, the Giants are going to need to fill out their roster and Cahill when healthy is a solid pitcher.

Taijuan Walker signs a one year contract worth two million dollars with the Seattle Mariners. Walker can earn up to three million dollars in total with incentives. At one time big things were expected of Walker. After the 2016 season, the Mariners traded Walker in a package to the Diamondbacks for Jean Segura and Mitch Haniger

After a solid 2017 season in Arizona Walker got injured in 2018 and only pitched 13 innings. Walker had Tommy John surgery and was out for the rest of the season and only pitched in one game in 2019 which was the last one of the season. Walker is still young and definitely worth a look especially for a team like the Mariners who are rebuilding.

Kevin Pillar

Kevin Pillar signs a one year contract with the Boston Red Sox. The terms of the deal are not yet known. Pillar was traded to the Giants early in the 2019 season by the Toronto Blue Jays and had the best offensive season of his career. Pillar set career highs in HR with 21 and RBI with 88.

The Red Sox just traded Mookie Betts and needed another outfielder to add to the mix of Jackie Bradley Jr., Andrew Benintendi, and the newly acquired Alex Verdugo.
