Ron Roenicke Named Manager of the Boston Red Sox

Nearing the end of a wild offseason, the Boston Red Sox have found their new manager. The Red Sox will promote former bench coach Ron Roenicke to manager. The team expects to make the move official following the investigation from the MLB.

Roenicke was Boston’s bench coach under Alex Cora for the two seasons he was manager. As well as Roenicke, Boston third base coach Carlos Febles was also in the running for the job. Additionally, Mark Kotsay of the Oakland Athletics, and Luis Urueta of the Arizona Diamondbacks were looked at.

The former bench coach does have experience being a big-league manager. Roenicke was the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers for parts of five seasons. From 2011-2015 he tallied a 342-331 record with the Brewers; he led the team to a first-place finish in 2011.

Red Sox part ways with Alex Cora

The team “mutually parted ways” with former manager Alex Cora after his involvement with the 2017 Houston Astros. Cora’s name was mentioned nine times in the Commissioner’s reports about the 2017 World Series champions. Following the report, Rob Manfred believes that Cora was the ring-leader for the Astros methods of cheating before heading to Boston.

The investigation into the 2018 Red Sox

The Red Sox expect the investigation to be wrapped up by the start of spring training. Red Sox ownership seems to feel confident that their investigation won’t be as revealing as the Astros was. At the press conference following the Cora decision, Sam Kennedy seemed comfortable with the situation. Sam Kennedy asked the media to “withhold judgment” until the full report comes out.

2020 Spring Training

As the offseason comes to an end, the team will head down to Fort Meyers for spring training. Pitchers and catchers will report to Fenway south on February 11, and the rest of the team will join on February 16.
