San Diego Padres Hire Jayce Tingler to Be Their Next Manager
The San Diego Padres have hired Jayce Tingler to be their next manager. Tingler who is 38 years old was the Major League Player Development Field Coordinator for the Texas Rangers. His close relationship with Padres general manager AJ Preller was a big factor in Tingler becoming the next Padres manager.
Jayce Tingler Profile
Tingler was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 2003 draft. After the 2005 season, the Rangers selected Tingler in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft. Tingler only played four seasons and never played in the Major Leagues.
Tingler stayed in the Rangers organization after his playing days ended. In his post-playing career, Tingler has held various positions such as manager, field coordinator, and coordinator of instruction.
When the Rangers fired manager Jeff Banister in 2018, Tingler left the front office to become the interim bench coach for the last ten games of the season. Tingler did interview for the Rangers manager position after the season but was not offered the job.
Former Rangers manager Ron Washington was also one of the favorites for the open Padres position. Washington also has ties to Preller.
Padres Outlook
Not many teams have the young talent that the Padres do. The signing of Manny Machado shows that the Padres are willing to spend money to improve their team. The Padres also have six of the top 100 ranked minor league players. So Tingler will have plenty of toys to play with.
However, one of the biggest toys the Padres have did not finish the 2019 season. Fernando Tatis Jr. is the crown jewel of the Padres young team. Tatis suffered a back injury and had to miss the last month and a half of the 2019 season. He is expected to be healthy by February 2020 which makes him ready for Spring training.
Tatis won the MLB Heart and Hustle Award in 2019. This award is given to a player who shows passion for the game and who also best embodies the values, spirit, and traditions of the game. Every MLB team nominates one player for this award. So that tells you the importance Tatis has to this franchise.
The Padres have the talent to be competitive. They have a general manager who is not afraid to make a big splash. Now it is time to see if Jayce Tingler can get the Padres to the next level.
