The New York Mets Are Eliminated from the Postseason

The New York Mets have been eliminated from the 2019 postseason. After a great offseason, this season was an improvement over their previous one. Unfortunately, as the National League Wild Card race was so close, it ultimately ended with the Mets out of the playoffs. Although if few games ended differently, the Mets would have made the playoffs.

Roller Coaster Season

The 2019 Mets were all over the map. On some nights, they were great and on others, they were just mediocre. Ultimately, the Achilles heel of the Mets seemed to be their slow start to the season. Had they not finished the first half with a record of 40-50, it’s likely that the Mets would have made the postseason. Although they had an incredible second half of the season it will come short of their goal this year.

The moment where the season changed for the Mets is the night where Pete Alonso won the Home Run Derby. From that night, it ignited a spark in the team to do better. However, in games played against teams over .500, the Mets had a record of 45-55. As for their own division, the Mets had losing records to both the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves. Had the Mets been able to play well against better opponents, that would have been the difference.

The Bullpen

Probably the most talked-about issue surrounding the Mets this season was the bullpen. Arms such as Edwin Diaz (ERA of 5.59) and Jeurys Familia (ERA of 6.00) cost the Mets in critical games. If the management were smart, they would look to move them in the offseason.

Looking to the Future

The 2020 New York Mets seemed to be set for a deep postseason run. The team has seen significant seasons from Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Amed Rosario, and Jacob deGrom. These four players can form a new core that will lead this team for many years to come. As this team stayed healthy, it shows that the New York Mets are a real threat in the National League East.
