Aaron Sanchez Traded to Houston Astros

The Houston Astros have acquired pitchers Aaron Sanchez and Joe Biagini and outfielder Cal Stevenson from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for outfielder Derek Fisher.

Aaron Sanchez’s Career

Aaron Sanchez is a right-handed starting pitcher. The 26-year-old pitcher has spent his entire six-year career with the Blue Jays. In his first two seasons in Toronto, Sanchez was pitching out of the bullpen, but he started the 2016 season in the starting rotation.

Sanchez went 15-2 with a 3.00 ERA in his first season as a starting pitcher. Unfortunately, this was be the best season he had as a Blue Jay. In 2017, he made only eight starts due to finger and blister issues. The next season, Sanchez, again, was injured, and he made only 20 starts due to a contusion in his hand.

The 2019 season has been the worst of Sanchez’s career. His 3-14 record with a 6.07 ERA has been among the worst of any starting pitcher this season. His Blue Jay career ends with a 32-33 record and a 3.96 ERA.

Sanchez’s Scouting Report

Sanchez was once considered a top-flight starter but that was before he got injured. His injuries were not to his arm but his fingers and hand. Sanchez has a mid 90’s fastball and an excellent curveball with a sharp bite. He also has a good changeup. Sanchez needs to use his secondary pitches more.

Sanchez has a career WHIP of 1.368 — high for a quality starting pitcher. His four walks per nine innings are also something that needs to be improved.

Sanchez has a tall build with long arms but his body is loose and lanky. He has the stuff to be a front line starter, as he has shown in 2016. Sanchez’s immediate future could be in the bullpen, since the Astros have one of the best starting rotations in all of baseball.

Sanchez is making $3.9 million this season and is eligible for arbitration in 2020. He could be a fixture in the Astros rotation if they are able to figure out his problems.
