Alec Bohm 2018 MLB Draft Profile

With the 2018 MLB Draft quickly approaching, many teams are gearing up to select the player they hope can prosper into a star, and get them a World Series title. Teams can find anything from rare gems in the later rounds to busts in the first round. In this Last Word On Baseball Draft Profile, we take an in-depth look at third baseman Alec Bohm.

Alec Bohm 2018 Draft Profile

Bohm comes into the draft after just finishing his junior year at Wichita State University. He is also a graduate of Roncalli Catholic High School in Omaha, Nebraska as a member of the 2015 class. Bohm was eligible to be drafted in the 2015 MLB Draft, but he was very committed to attending Wichita State so he was not drafted. Bohm has the benefit of being a Shocker as Wichita State has some incredible names in their alumni list with the biggest name being Joe Carter, who was selected by the Chicago Cubs with the second overall pick in the 1981 MLB Draft. Other famous Wichita State alumni who made it to the majors include, but are not limited to, Mike Pelfrey, the Gillaspie brothers (Connor and Casey), and Casey Blake to name a few.

Strengths

According to MLB Pipeline’s scouting report on Bohm, his hitting is easily his greatest strength. This is complemented by Bohm’s incredible plate presence. Some things that make his presence so dynamic and great include his ability to take charge of the strike zone. Combine that with his incredible power and ability to generate power and Bohm has the makings for a deadly hitter in MLB.

Weaknesses

The biggest weakness in Bohm’s game by far is his fielding. As of right now, Bohm’s fielding will not be good enough to play at third base in the majors. As noted by MLB Pipeline, Bohm doesn’t have the quickness to react to plays, or the arm to throw from third to make it as a third baseman. Another thing Bohm can improve on is his baserunning.

Final Thoughts

Even with his struggles in the field, Bohm is sure to be a first round pick, maybe even a top five pick. With a potential move to first base reportedly being taken into consideration, Bohm should have no problems being selected by a team. His hitting statistics speak for themselves, as well as a stellar junior year stat line. Bohm set new highs for himself in batting average, batting a .332, home runs, hitting 15, and RBI, driving in 50. In his sophomore year, Bohm had another great stat line, batting a .305 batting average with 11 home runs and 40 RBI. During his freshman year, Bohm was also very impressive, hitting a .303 batting average with 6 home runs and 30 RBI.

In his latest mock draft, MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo has Bohm being selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the third overall pick. This would be a great pick for the Phillies who have surprised all of the baseball world this year with their incredible play. However, they haven’t had a true star since the days of Ryan Howard. With his potential, Alec Bohm could be on his way to being a star in MLB.
