According to reports, free agent OF Jarrod Dyson has signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks worth $7.5 million.

Dyson, 33, played 111 games for the Seattle Mariners last season. He hit .251/.324/.350 with five home runs and 30 RBI in 111 games. However, a bad defensive rating (1.7 WAR) kept him at just 2.6 WAR for the season. He was, however, a threat on the base paths, collecting 28 stolen bases last season.
Dyson has spent seven seasons in the majors, six of them with the Kansas City Royals, and one with the Mariners. He has hit .258/.325/.350 in his career with 12 home runs, 131 RBI, and 204 Stolen Bases.
Dyson, aka Zoombiya, comes out of McComb, Mississippi. He went to South West Mississippi Community College and was drafted by the Royals in the 50th round of the 2006 Amateur Draft. Dyson made his debut on September 7, 2010. He was hitless in his debut.
While Dyson has yet to make an All-Star appearance, he’s been an asset on the base paths and was a reliable hitter at the plate while in Kansas City. His best offensive year was in 2016 which was his last year with the Royals. He slashed .278/.340/.388 with 30 stolen bases, eight home runs, and 25 RBI. Dyson has recorded four seasons with 30 stolen bases. In 2012, he recorded 30 stolen bases, the following season in 2013 he swiped 34, and in 2014 Dyson reached a career-high with 36 stolen bases. Dyson has surely shown that he is deadly on the base paths.
If teams are not interested in breaking the bank to get a star free agent, Dyson should be looked at as a cheaper, older Lorenzo Cain this off-season. Although he may not provide the same threat at the plate as Cain, he can field just as well, and he will provide speed at the top of any team’s line up.
Outlook
The signing of Dyson will not steal any headline in the offseason, but he is a solid addition to any team. Dyson can contribute off the bench and make the occasional start while proving to be a game changer at times with his speed.
