According to reports, the Miami Marlins have traded star slugger Giancarlo Stanton to the New York Yankees. Miami will receive Starlin Castro and prospects in return. New York has also agree to pay $265 MM of the remaining $295 MM on Stanton’s current contract In the end, the Marlins had deals in place with several teams, including the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants. When presented his those options, Stanton ultimately chose New York. His preference was said to be the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they did not make the push to get him that New York did. The deal is not yet final, and awaits a physical.

Report: Marlins Trade Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees
Stanton, 28, 159 played games for the Marlins last season. He hit .281/.376/.631, with 59 home runs and 132 RBI in 152 games. Despite a bad defensive rating (0.4 WAR), all eyes were on Stanton’s 59 home run season, which allowed him to finish the year with a 7.6 WAR, including a 6.5 offensive WAR (oWAR). Known for being a slugger, Stanton only stole two bases last season.
Stanton has spent 10 seasons in the majors, all with Miami. He has hit .268/.376/.554 in his career, with 267 home runs, 672 RBI, and 36 steals. Stanton has a career 35.1 WAR.
Giancarlo Stanton comes from Panorama City, CA, located in Los Angeles. Stanton did not go to college, but he went to Notre Dame high school in Sherman Oaks, CA. He was selected in the second round of the 2007 Junior Amateur Draft. Stanton made his debut for Marlins in 2010 when they were known as the Florida Marlins. Stanton went 3-5 in his debut against the Philadelphia Phillies. In Stanton’s ten-year career, he has made three All-Star appearances, won two Sliver Slugger awards, and became the 2017 NL MVP this season.
The new ownership group, led by Derek Jeter and Brian Sherman, plans on shrinking their pay roll in order to start a rebuild for their new team. Moving the majority of Stanton’s $295 MM contract surely gives Miami payroll flexibility.
The Marlins are getting some good players in return, but nothing near the caliber of Stanton. For them, this was about clearing salary. Castro, however, was an All-Star in 2017. He finished the year with a triple-slash line of .300/.338/.454, 16 home runs, and 63 RBI. The eight-year vet, who spent most of his career with the Chicago Cubs before playing the past two years in New York, owns a .282 career batting average, and is a solid fielder.
New York will also receive prospects Jorge Guzman and Jose Devers, according to Joel Sherman. Neither is a proven commodity by any means, but Devers is the cousin of Rafael Devers.
