This season marked the first time since 2013 that Sabathia had a double-digit win total. In 2013, Sabathia had 14 wins.
Since the end of the 2012 season, Sabathia has dealt with multiple injuries. When the 2012 season ended, Sabathia underwent surgery to remove a bone spur. During the 2013 season, Sabathia saw his season shortened because of a strained hamstring. In 2014, he missed most of the season because of right knee inflammation and had to undergo microfracture surgery and there was a possibility that his career could have been over. In 2015 and 2016 Sabathia’s knee bothered him once again and he had to have surgery on it at the end of 2016 once again but it was considered as a routine clean up.
Sabathia has had his pitching style change since the 2013 season. Sabathia used to have a lot of velocity on his pitches but since 2013 has relied mainly on being a control pitcher. Most recently this season, Sabathia cut back on the use of his four-seam fastball and used his sinker and cutter more often.
Sabathia has spent 17 seasons in the majors. He has spent eight seasons with the Cleveland Indians and 9 seasons with the New York Yankees. He did spend half a season with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008.
Sabathia has made 509 starts in his career, carries a record of 237-146, has an ERA of 3.70, he has pitched 38 complete games (12 shutouts), has thrown 3317.0 innings, and has 2,846 strikeouts.
The lefty starter is a six-time All-Star making it to the All-Star game in 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011, and 2012. He led MLB in wins during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Sabathia also won the Cy Young award in 2007. He won the ALCS MVP during the 2009 season and also helped the Yankees win the World Series that year. Sabathia finished behind Ichiro Suzuki in the 2001 American League Rookie of the Year voting.
