Arrieta experienced a feeling of tightness while pitching in the third inning of Monday’s game, which ended up a 12-0 loss. The tightness he felt in his leg was severe enough that he was unable to throw a warmup pitch to prove that he was healthy enough to stay in the game.

Arrieta is now 31 years of age and is a popular and very well respected leader of the Cubs. The pitcher is 14-9 with a 3.48 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 28 starts and 160 1/3 innings pitched in 2017. While he hasn’t been as sharp as he was in his Cy Young 2015 campaign or even last year, Arrieta is still one of the most important players on the Cubs.

The MRI that Arrieta had undergone was not performed on Monday night, but rather on Tuesday. The reasoning for this was that the accuracy of the MRI was dependent on the swelling subsiding.

Arrieta had been able to ambulate without any nagging signs of pain on Tuesday. However, he declined to discuss any details about his injury with the media and reporters until the results of his MRI were evaluated and seen by the medical team that he works with. When the results were revealed, he stayed optimistic.

“It’s better than it could have been,” Arrieta said, according to the Chicago Sun Times. “It stinks to miss any time at all, but it should be short.”

The Cubs will have southpaw Mike Montgomery filling in for Arrieta on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers. They currently hold a 3.5 game lead over the Brewers for first place in the National League Central.
