While the Houston Astros have been cruising through the season despite having ace Dallas Keuchel on the disabled list, another key piece to the team has been placed on the DL. Star shortstop Carlos Correa went down with a torn ligament in his left thumb. While playing the Seattle Mariners on Monday, Correa swung through a pitch and was clearly in discomfort. After manager A.J. Hinch and head trainer Jeremiah Randall came out to examine the 22-year-old star shortstop, Correa exited the game in the fourth inning.
Carlos Correa is expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

Houston Loses Carlos Correa to Thumb Injury
Correa later explained that he reaggravated the same injury he suffered after sliding into home plate while playing the Atlanta Braves on July 4. Correa thought the All-Star break would allow him to recover from the original injury, so he decided to play through the pain. Unfortunately, Correa’s decision to play through his prior injury could be why he exited with a even worse injury on Monday.
Carlos Correa will likely be out for 6-8 weeks, so we will expect his return in September. Correa left Monday’s game hitting .326, with 20 home runs and 67 RBI. GM Jeff Luhnow commented that losing a player of Corea’s caliber is a big blow to the team, but he’ll be back in September, which will be in time for the Astros stretch run. Minor league infielder Colin Moran was called up from Triple-A to fill in for the star shortstop while he’s on the DL.
Although the Astros are currently running away with the AL West, Houston fans will be holding their collective breath while Correa is on the shelf.
