Over the past 11 days, the Arizona Diamondbacks have played 11 consecutive road games in 3 different cities. Their longest road trip in 7 years. They’ve only had one winning road trip all season, and this was not one of them. The Diamondbacks fell to 34-25 after going 5-6 on the road as they faced the Brewers, Pirates, and Marlins.
Arizona Diamondbacks Continue to Struggle on the Road
Trouble in Miami
After winning the series against the Pirates, the Diamondbacks fell apart. Over a four game series against the Marlins, the Diamondbacks went 1-3. Let’s not forget, on June 3rd, the Diamondbacks had a no hitter against them pitched by Edinson Volquez. That was the third time in franchise history that the Diamondbacks have had a no hitter against them. Before the final game of the series the Diamondbacks had 47 straight batters retired by the Marlins. The streak was broken by Daniel Descalso who hit a leadoff double against the Marlins on Sunday. Although attacking early, the Diamondback’s bats never came alive when needed. There had only been one base hit by the Diamondbacks after the 4th inning- a single by Rey Fuentes in the 5th. Due to their inability to strike late against the Marlins, the Diamondbacks were handed their 3rd loss of the series.
Nick Ahmed and Jake Lamb Keep Strong Bats
On the 11 game road trip, Nick Ahmed was 8-25(.320) with 2B, 3B, HR, 4 RBI, and 3 R. Also batting well, is Jake Lamb. He’s 11-44(.250) with 3 2B, 3B, HR, 6RBI, 4 BB and 4 R. Jake’s batting average is not as high, however he’s produced quality at- bats for the team. Above all, due to Nick and Jake stepping up, they’ve stayed in the race for the NL West. Currently, the Dbacks are 2.0 games back from the division leading Rockies, and 1.5 games back from the second place Dodgers. If the Diamondbacks want to be in first place, they must be hitting consistently.
Moving Forward
The Diamondbacks will look to end their losing streak as they take a day off before the upcoming six game home stand. Above all, the Diamondbacks need to get their heads in the game and shake off the underwhelming road trip. The bullpen ERA is still second best in the majors over the past 23 games. At home, the key for the Diamondbacks will be to back up the solid pitching by the starters, and get the bats going early to set the tone.
