Reds Trade Dan Straily to Marlins

In a continuing effort to rebuild the Cincinnati Reds starting rotation, the team has traded away reliable starting pitcher Dan Straily to the Miami Marlins. In return, the team receives three prospects who are expected to contribute this coming season. The Marlins announced the trade via the team’s official Twitter account.

Still relatively young at 28, Straily was claimed by the Reds off waivers from the San Diego Padres early last season and posted solid numbers (a 14-8 record with an ERA of 3.76 while appearing in 34 contests). He’s expected to build on those good numbers in Miami, where he will join the incumbent Marlins starters, such as Adam Conley and Wei-Yin Chen in an effort by the team to soften the on-field blow of tragically losing Jose Fernandez. The personal loss can’t be mitigated. The Marlins came very close to contending for a Wild Card last season. Straily will help a young, talented team make the final push.

The Reds, meanwhile, will receive Luis Castillo, Austin Brice, and Isaiah White. In particular, the gem of this deal moving forward is Castillo, who will be expected to be a part of the rotation this season for the Reds. Castillo, just 24 years old, was ranked as the Reds fifth-best prospect this offseason after posting impressive numbers in the minors (2.26 ERA in 131.2 innings pitched while down in Double-A Jacksonville and Single-A Jupiter).

Alongside Reds starting pitchers Homer Bailey and Anthony DeSclafani, Castillo figures to compete for a slot in the starting pitcher rotation that could lead the way for the Reds to return to the postseason, something they have not accomplished since 2013.
