GLASGOW, Scotland – Canada lifted the Bowl at the 2014 Commonwealth Games Sevens after beating Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda and the Cook Islands at Ibrox Stadium on Sunday.
After easing past Trinidad & Tobago in their earlier quarter-final before defeating Uganda 32-0, the Canadians were then ruthless against their final opponents. The XXth Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was an incredible event for the sport of rugby, as the four-day crowd of over 171,000 fans set a new Rugby Sevens record.

Canada 33-0 Trinidad & Tobago
Canada began Day 2 of the Commonwealth Games Sevens with a professional 33-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago that saw them advance into the Bowl semi-finals. Five tries were scored by the wounded Canadians, who are eyeing a best possible ninth-place finish on Sunday after they missed out on the Medals competition.
Mike Fuailefau got the ball rolling as early as 30 seconds into the game when he sliced through a hole on the right before heading for the posts for seven points. It wasn’t a sign of things to come though as only one further score would be added in the first-half, which came from a lovely counter-attack as Justin Douglas raced over for 14-0 following a nice looped pass from playmaker Nathan Hirayama.
Soon after the turnaround Canada were over again, this time Hirayama turning from provider to scorer as he finished off a move on the right for a 19-0 lead. And then it was Kieran Crowley’s bench that added the gloss as Sean White crossed in the eleventh and fourteenth minute as Canada started the day with purpose.
Canada 32-0 Uganda
Canada secured a win to nil for the second timeon Sunday as they eased past Uganda 32-0 in the Bowl semi-final of the 2014 Commonwealth Games Sevens. In a professional showing that follows the 33-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago earlier in the day, the Canadians have progressed into the ninth-place clash.
Tries were picked up by Douglas, John Moonlight, White, Scholz (2) and Lucas Hammond, with three apiece in each half to kick off Sunday evening’s action. Douglas was first to go over when he slipped through the Ugandan net with two minutes played. Hirayama sent over the extra two points for a 7-0 advantage.
Then it was the turn of Moonlight to cross on the right after a fine pass from White before the latter scored a five-pointer of his own down the left sideline for 17-0. Crowley once again used his bench to good effect in the second stanza and it was Scholz who scored first after the interval before he added his second with a minute and a half remaining, making the scoreline 27-0 to an in-form Canadian outfit.
But Canada weren’t done there as from a sloppy Ugandan scrum five metres out, Hammond dived on the loose ball to make it 32-0 as the full-time hooter sounded.
Canada 50-7 Cook Islands
Canada concluded their Commonwealth Games Sevens campaign with a ruthless showing of attacking rugby as they amassed eight tries against the Cook Islands. White claimed a hat-trick of scores to take his personal tally on the day up to five while Douglas (2), Moonlight, Sean Duke and Harry Jones also crossed the line.
Douglas was the man to break the early deadlock after a solid opening from the Canadians before White dived over twice in quick succession for a 17-0 cushion. Canada’s dominance in possession would continue to be mirrored on the scoreboard when skipper Moonlight showed good pace to score on the left wing and when White claimed his third try before the interval, things were looking ominous in Glasgow.
It was again Douglas who got the first score of the half which made it 36-0, leading to head coach Crowley making a raft of changes in an attempt to kick on for more. And it worked as further tries from Jones and Duke – after the Cook Islands got a breakaway score – saw Canada hit 50 points for a positive end to the weekend.
