There will be a few new and very young faces on the grid in Melbourne so in this article we give you a little snippet as to who they are and where they’ve come from. Here are your F1 2015 newbies.
No. 12 Felipe Nasr
The Young Brazilian shocked the paddock in Brazil when Sauber announced he would partner Marcus Ericsson in a brand new lineup for the team. Having had a year long battle with Jolyon Palmer in the GP2 series in 2014, he lost out and finished 3rd in the Championship. Alongside this he took part in selected FP1 sessions for the Williams F1 team. However, some put his signing down to money which Sauber desperately need and which Nasr provides with major sponsor Banco do Brasil moving from Williams to Sauber. However, although cast as a pay driver, it’s probably best to wait and see what kind of performances he can deliver and whether Sauber can improve on their abysmal season from 2014. Nasr will drive the number 12.
No. 33 Max Verstappen
Son of former F1 driver Jos Verstappen, the 17 year old is set to break Jaime Alguersuari’s record of being the youngest ever driver to start a Grand Prix in Melbourne. Replacing the promoted Danill Kvyat, he has already had some experience of F1 machinery, taking part in a few Practice sessions this year and finishing in respectable positions. This year he competed in the FIA Formula Three Championship and scored the most wins, 10, than any other driver but finished 3rd in the championship to winner Esteban Ocon. He will race with the number 33 on his Toro Rosso next year.
No. 55 Carlos Sainz, Jr
After an uncertain few weeks, it was finally announced that spaniard and son of former World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz will race with Toro Rosso for 2015, replacing Jean-Eric Vergne and creating a whole new line up at the Faenza based team. Having recently won the Formula Renault 3.5 championship he tested for Red Bull in the post season test at Abu Dhabi which apparently sealed the deal on his Toro Rosso race seat. Since he has dropped the ‘Jr’ from his name and chosen to race with the number 55.
