New faces make plays

The Iowa Barnstormers started the season off on a high note on Sunday when they defeated the Green Bay Blizzard 41-20 on the road.

Newcomers were the source of the team’s first 20 points of the game for the team in what had a reasonable makeover following a United Conference championship.

After Green Bay tallied the game’s first points with a field goal, running back Donovan Williams found his way into the end zone for Iowa to take a 7-3 lead in the first.

Green Bay would take one more lead, going up 10-7 after touchdown, but Iowa would regain it and didn’t look back.

Former Dubuque Spartan Johnny Duarte got his first touchdown as a Barnstormer as well, giving Iowa a 14-10 lead.

Cody Barber would kick two field goals in the second quarter on top of it to give Iowa a 20-13 lead at halftime. Barber finished the game perfect for the day with two field goals and five extra points.

In the second half it was more of the same, but with that fans were used to seeing in 2017.

Ryan Balentine earned two touchdown receptions from Drew Powell and Brady Roland grabbed along with a few second effort plays. Balentine would finish with 119 yards and Roland added a 62 more.

Bryce Enyard also contributed with an interception, that prevented the Blizzard from tying the game at 20.

Powell finished with a strong 20-26 line with 208 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

The team will return to the field for their home opener against the Arizona Rattlers after a bye week on Saturday March 10.
