Iowa Barnstormers’ Drew Powell will start, play entire game Sunday

Powell will start

This Sunday, when the Iowa Barnstormers travel to Wisconsin to face the Green Bay Blizzard, they will be using just one quarterback in starter Drew Powell.

The team came into the season with two established players in the position in the indoor veteran Powell and former Iowa State Cyclone Grant Rohach.

Although, head coach Dixie Wooten says their wont be a dual quarterback system used on Sunday.

“Drew is the starter,” Wooten said. “I don’t believe in switching quarterbacks in and out. [Powell] will be in there the entire game.”

Wooten, being a former quarterback himself, doesn’t believe in the two-quarterback system that was used for a time by Paul Rhoads when Rohach was in college.

“I feel like you can’t get a rhythm with a two-quarterback system,” Wooten said.

Wooten also reference that he wants his players to rally around one leader, at least for the time being.

“[I want] guys to understand who the leader is and want to play for them,” Wooten said.

Iowa is an offseason removed from a team that rallied around one of the best quarterbacks the organization has seen.

Since Travis Partridge, who lead the Indoor Football League (IFL) in rushing touchdowns, retired, Coach Dixie Wooten has had his work cut out for him trying to bring in a new leader.

Although he was able to land it two.

Powell comes into Iowa after a very successful back half of the season in Nebraska. He didn’t start the year with the team, but ended up leading them to the Intense Conference Championship game.

“We’re going to do everything we can to win a championship this year,” Powell said. “We’re going to start with the little things, trying to win every home game, win the division, and then go from there.”

Rohach, on the other hand, played at Iowa State for three seasons and became a fan favorite in his time there.

Although he wasn’t on the field every game of every season, Cyclone fans will still remember his name.

“It’s good to be back in Des Moines,” Rohach said. “Iowa State has one of the best fan bases in the country and the fact that some people still recognize my name is a testament to how invested they are in that program.”

The Barnstormers will kick off their game against the Blizzard on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. The game can be streamed live on YouTube.

“We just keep bouncing off of each other and its good that we both kind of feel the same way about each other with no bad blood,” Powell said. “We’re both coming in here competing and trying to do the best we can.”
