Iker Casillas : On his way out of Real Madrid?

Speculation has started to grow as to goalkeeper Iker Casillas’ future at Real Madrid. The 33-year-old goalkeeper has been struggling to regain his form since the end of Mourinho’s reign, when his starting spot was given to Diego Lopez, creating quite the transfer buzz around the Bernabeu. This season, he has made a number of crucial mistakes, leading to further speculation about his future.

While Casillas has stepped up and put in some strong performances for “Los Merengues”, he hasn’t played at the level he used to and that which is to be expected of a Real Madrid goalkeeper.

Iker Casillas is undoubtedly a footballing legend: World Cup winner in 2010 and Champions League winner (thrice), the Spaniard is set to go down in football history as a great. However while the phrase “Legends never die” may be true, legends do lose form, which definitely comes into play with transfer decisions, and it’s clear that substitute keeper Keylor Navas is drooling for a chance to prove himself to Ancelotti after a seemingly rushed summer purchase following the Costa Rican’s amazing performances at the World Cup in Brazil. For Real Madrid, a clear choice for goalkeeper seems to be Manchester United’s David De Gea.

The twenty-four year old Spaniard has proven his worth at Old Trafford and has been in sensational form for the Red Devils this season. While De Gea is impressing in England, it is believed that he is growing tired of Manchester and would like a move back to sunny Spain: music to the ears of some Madridistas.

Whether or not Real Madrid decide to give Casillas the boot, his lacking form is becoming increasingly worrisome. Madrid will likely retain Casillas’ services until the end of the season if he at least remains somewhat consistent. The summer transfer window of 2015 likely promises big changes at the Santiago Bernabeu; unfortunately for Iker Casillas, they might not be the changes he was hoping for.
