Cristiano Ronaldo: ‘Best in the World’, wins Ballon d’Or

Real Madrid star and Portugal’s captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, continues to succeed in his drive to be the best as he captured his third Ballon d’Or, the award for the best player in the world. He beat out his biggest rival, Lionel Messi, for the second straight year. He also finished ahead of the third nominee, German keeper Manuel Neuer.

The dominating attacker won by a large margin, scoring around 37% of the votes, while Messi and Neuer each attracted around 15% of the votes. Thrilled, he spoke at the ceremony, “I would like to thank all of those who voted for me, my president, my coach and Real Madrid. It has been an unforgettable year. To win this trophy at the end of it is something incredibly unique.”

The soon-to-be 30-year old didn’t show any lack of drive in his speech, as he said, “I want to continue to work as I have so far, to try and and win more titles, for my mother, for my father, for my son. To all the Portuguese people out there: I never thought that I would take this trophy back on three occasions. I want to become one of the greatest players of all time.”

Messi had earlier lead with three Ballon d’Or trophies, but Ronaldo is now in level terms with the Argentine.
