2022 NBA Draft Recap

The NBA Draft has finally concluded. After all 58 picks have been made, there are a few important headlines to cover, as well as surprises and trades among the lottery picks. This draft night, like most, was incredibly chaotic, as many teams got involved in multiple ways. The top of the draft featured some minor and unexpected changes, but there were no major surprises.

Lottery (First 14 Picks) Summery

Here is the summary of the first 14 picks in the draft:

The Orlando Magic selected:

The Oklahoma City Thunder selected:

The Houston Rockets selected:

Draft Night Deals

Pistons get:

Hornets get:

  • 2023 first-round pick (Denver)
  • 2023 second-round pick (New York)
  • 2023 second-round pick (Utah)
  • 2023 second-round pick (most favorable of Dallas/Miami)
  • 2024 second-round pick (New York)

Knicks get: 

  • 2023 first-round pick (Detroit)
  • 2023 first-round pick (Washington)
  • 2025 first-round pick (Milwaukee)

Thunder get:

  • Ousmane Dieng (No. 11 pick)

The New York Knicks traded 11th overall pick Ousmane Dieng to the Oklahoma City Thunder for three future first-round picks. They also acquired  Jalen Duren, who was rerouted from the Charlotte Hornets’ 13th overall pick. The Knicks then dealt Duren and Kemba Walker to the Detroit Pistons. Walker is expected to enter free agency after a potential buyout with Detroit.

Timberwolves get:

Grizzlies get:

  • Jake LaRavia (No. 19 pick)

The Memphis Grizzlies had a strong desire to trade up in the draft and used their two late first-round picks to do so. They traded picks 22 and 29 to acquire pick 19, where they picked Jake LaRavia. The Minnesota Timberwolves, who previously owned pick 19, selected Walker Kessler with the 22nd pick and TyTy Washington with the 29th.

76ers get:

Grizzlies get:

The Philadelphia 76ers involved themselves in this draft, trading the 23rd overall pick to the Memphis Grizzlies. In return, the 76ers acquired De’Anthony Melton. The 76ers also sent Green to Memphis as a part of this deal. With the 23rd pick, the Grizzlies selected David Roddy.

Earlier Trades Finalized

Trail Blazers get:

Pistons get:

  • Gabriele Procida (No. 36 pick)
  • 2025 first-round pick (via Milwaukee) (Later traded to New York)
  • 2025 second-round pick

Crucial parts of the Jerami Grant trade have been finalized. The Pistons used the second-round pick they received in this trade to take Gabriele Procida. The Trail Blazers received Ismael Kamagate, but rerouted the French prospect to the Denver Nuggets, Kamagate is expected to be a draft and stash player, and may only see the NBA floor in a few years.

Lakers get:

  • Max Christe (No. 35 Pick)

Magic get:

  • Highest 2028 second-round pick from Lakers or Wizards (owed to Lakers)
  • Cash considerations

The Los Angeles Lakers traded a future second pick and cash considerations to acquire the 35th overall pick from the Orlando Magic. With their only pick in the draft, the Lakers selected Max Christe.
