Joe Rizzo 2016 MLB Draft Profile

For Joe Rizzo, it’s shaping out like this: if teams think he can stay at third base, he’s a clear first rounder. However, if teams think he needs to be moved to first base or the outfield, he’s going to slip to the second or third round. His approach at the plate is polished for someone who’s going to be only 18 years of age at the time of the draft, but a commitment to South Carolina throws a wrench in any team’s hopes of signing him.

Standing at 5’11” and weighing 215 pounds, Rizzo is not expected to fill out anymore than he already has. His speed on the base paths is questionable, and while he currently plays shortstop for his high school team, he played third at showcases over the summer. Despite inconsistent footwork, Rizzo demonstrates quick hands and strong forearms that allow him to show off his power to left field. This is a player who is not flashy, but has shown the ability to adapt and hit at every level. What it comes down to is whether a team is willing to gamble on a below average defender with the potential to be an above average hitter.

Strengths:

  • Strong hands and forearms
  • Refined approach at the plate
  • Flashes of power to pull side
  • Tall and athletic frame

Weaknesses:

  • Inconsistent footwork
  • May need to be moved to first base or left field long term
  • Not expected to fill out anymore
  • Questionable speed

MLB Comparison: Aaron Hill, third base, Milwaukee Brewers
Projected Pick Range: Early second round
Most Likely Landing Spot: Oakland Athletics

Bottom Line

Whether Rizzo lands in the first or second round will come down to how MLB clubs evaluate his defense. Rizzo should be passable at third base with enough reps in the minor leagues, but a move to first base or left field might be the safest bet. An above average hitting third baseman is much more valuable than an above average hitting left fielder or first baseman. Considering his ability to hit and get on base, Rizzo may be a match for Billy Beane in Oakland. He may not be a five-tool player, but he certainly has the talent necessary to be developed in the Oakland organization.
