Report: Buffalo Bills name Tyrod Taylor starting QB, Cut RB Fred Jackson

According to a report from Jay Glazer at Fox Sports, the Buffalo Bills have named former Baltimore Raven and Virginia Tech product Tyrod Taylor as their starting quarterback.  Taylor will be under centre in Orchard Park in Week One of the NFL season when the Bills take on the Indianapolis Colts.

Taylor beat out Matt Cassel and former first round pick E.J. Manuel for the job. Taylor is an extremely athletic quarterback who offers similar running ability to Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback who thrived in current Bills offensive co-ordinator Greg Roman’s offense. It is expected that the Bills will keep Cassel and Manuel on the roster in case of injury or struggle by Taylor.

The 26-year-old Taylor was 24 of 31 passes (77.4 percent) for the Bills in the pre-season. While he didn’t have any touchdown passes, he consistently moved the offence efficiently and did scramble for a 21-yard touchdown run against the Steelers on Saturday.

In another move, the Bills have released veteran running back Fred Jackson. Jackson is third all-time in franchise history for rushing yards and has played 106 games for the team over his career. The move means that Karlos Williams will be the backup running back, behind new Bills acquisition LeSean McCoy.

Jackson is expected to garner plenty of interest around the league, as the veteran back is still a reliable runner and pass catcher, and also a strong veteran leader.
