Where there is smoke… there is fire:

On Wednesday, while the internet was humming along with with April fools’ gags, there was one rumour involving the Impact and the potential acquisition of striker Kenny Cooper that may hold some weight. The thirty year old Maryland native is currently on the Seattle Sounders roster and would no doubt be a welcome addition to a thin Montreal attack.

On Wednesday the Impact also announced the release of striker Santiago Gonzalez, opening up another international spot on the roster. With the release of Gonzalez, the Impact are left with only: Jack McInerney, Dominic Oduro, Anthony Jackson-Hamel, and Romario Williams up front. If even only for depth Kenny Cooper would be a useful (if not necessary) addition.  Fellow LWOS MLS writer, Brian Cook, weighed in on Twitter with his opinion.

Kenny Cooper has been a notable admission from the Sounders roster this season after receiving “excused absences” from training. It seems as though the price for Cooper at the present moment would not be too high with the Impact potentially sending over either allocation money, draft picks or a combination of the two.

The American striker has experience playing both in Europe as well as the MLS. Cooper has played most notably for 1860 Munich as well as FC Dallas, Portland Timbers, New York Red Bulls, and most recently the Seattle Sounders. He has scored 75 goals over the course of his MLS career and would bring experience and depth to a team that is trying to remedy their 2014 season.

The Impact have this weekend off MLS play before returning to the CONCACAF Champions League next week. Montreal is taking a 2-0 advantage into their semi-final leg against Costa Rican side Alajuelense.
