Fantasy Profile: Alcides Escobar, SS, Kansas City Royals

Alcides Escobar can't be counted on for much in fantasy other than 20-30 steals. But with shortstop as thin as it is, you take what you can get.

FANTASY PROFILE: ALCIDES ESCOBAR, SS, KANSAS CITY ROYALS

LWOS RANKING 10, CAPTAIN’S VALUE: $10.07

Here’s a list of the things you can count on from Alcides Escobar: flashy defense, 600+ PAs, low walk rate, above average strikeout rate, a handful of HR, and about 20-30 SB. As for the rest of his game, “volatile” or “unpredictable” are perhaps the most appropriate words to use.

Other than the aforementioned “sure things” about him, Escobar has shown an inability to develop much of a consistent baseline in any particular area, and it is unclear whether that is the result of a constantly fluctuating BABIP (which could trickle down and effect several things such as AVG and OBP), or the result of several things working in unison.

Despite all of this, Escobar has been around long enough to where you do not expect him to hit for a high average, get on base, or even hit for power. When you draft or buy Escobar, you are paying for SB and the possibility that he puts up decent R and RBI numbers due the volume of PAs. He settles in nicely as a borderline top-10 Shortstop, useful in just about every league format. Last season, he put up the highest run total of his career (74), thanks in part to an overachieving Kansas City Royals offense. In a year in which he is predicted to be the team’s primary leadoff hitter, here’s hoping he can repeat 2014’s success in 2015.
