Trios Enter Lucha Underground

At a recent taping, Lucha Underground crowned their inaugural Trios champions. I won’t spoil who the winners are but this is a great move on Lucha Undergrounds part.

At a recent taping, Lucha Underground kicked off their brand new Trios division. I won’t spoil the tapings but this is a great move on Lucha Undergrounds part. Trios, or three person tag teams (commonly known in North America to wrestle in six person matches), are very common in lucha libre, more common than a traditional two on two tag team match. It’s a smart move since the talent pool in Lucha Underground grows with each passing week, yet they still only have one hour of programming each week to showcase that talent. Having trios matches will allow more luchas on the card and really demonstrate the action that the luchadors provide.

It is that roster of very talented individuals that I wanted to look at, who has chemistry, who would mesh, and who would make for some rather interesting trio teams.

The Crew (Cortez Castro, Mr. Cisco, Bael)

This one is a no-brainer since the team already exist. The Crew were quite simply Big Ryks lackeys, but since putting him on the shelf, albeit temporarily, they have carved out a name for themselves and proved that they work well as a unit. With Cisco taking the lead they have become a thorn in many peoples sides, and that 3D/Codebreaker double team maneuver is lethal.

Law of the Jungle (King Cuerno, Drago, Prince Puma)

King Cuerno and Drago spent the tail end of 2014 embroiled in a heated rivalry that came to an end in early 2015, so it may seem odd to pair them up, however, sometimes the most bitter of rivals can make the best allies. The two have fought in a variety of matches in Lucha Underground including a vicious Last Lucha Standing match, proving that there may be no one else on the roster who knows Drago or King Cuerno better than they know each other.

Prince Puma may seem like an unlikely third member of this savage trio, but he shares a quiet stoicism with Cuerno and Drago, and with his win at Aztec Warfare, becoming the first Lucha Underground Champion, he can clearly hold his own in, and out of the ring, making Prince Puma a welcome addition to the team.

Hang Time (Argenis, Angelico, Aero Star)

High flying action is not a foreign concept to lucha libre, but these three always bring their A-game. Angelico has spent much of his time in Lucha Underground in multi-person matches making his spot in a trio a natural fit. While he hasn’t always come out on top, he impresses every time he steps through the ropes.

Argenis has lucha in his blood as the brother of Myzteziz (formerly Mistico/Sin Cara I) and he has had great showings against the likes of Fenix and Drago. Aero Star has been equally impressive and the three made their Lucha Underground debut in the same match. They lost that fatal four way to Cage, but they were also fighting each other. Things could be very different for these three high flyers if they were on the same page.

MUERTES Inc. (Mil Muertes, Pentagon Jr., Fenix)

More than any other team on this list I would love to see this trio become a reality. They have a perfect balance with Muertes’ strength, Fenix’s aerial skills, and Pentagon’s technique. Muertes and Fenix may be at odds right now, but that doesn’t mean the femme fatale Catrina couldn’t lure Fenix to the dark side, and who better for Fenix to team with than the man who, underneath the masks, is Fenix’s own brother, Pentagon Jr.

The only potential problem with this trio is that Mil Muertes is a bit of a loose cannon, but if Catrina can keep him in check, then this trio could be unstoppable.

Kings of the Road (Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, El Mariachi Loco)

This Trio might seem like a jobber team on the surface since Havoc and Mariachi haven’t racked up too many wins, but from desperation comes triumph. Son of Havoc is persistent and despite his heel antics, has amassed a bit of a fan following.

Not much is known about El Mariachi Loco, but that may be his greatest asset, his unpredictability. Throwing Ivelisse into the mix, who clearly has chemistry with Son of Havoc, and you have a team that will win by any means necessary.

El Desvalidos (The Underdogs)  (Pimpinela Escarlata, Mascarita Sagrada, Super Fly)

Here we have a team that many may not take seriously, between Pimpinelas challenging of gender stereotypes, and Mascarita Sagradas diminutive stature, most opponents would probably expect a match against this trio to be a walk in the park, but that walk could go South in a hurry. Despite his smaller size, Sagrada has proven he can mix it up with anyone in the ring and often uses his size to his advantage, getting out of a sticky situation easier than most.

Escarlata has much the same advantage, being an exotico luchador, some wrestlers don’t know what to make of him and as such underestimate the flamboyant wrestler. Add Super Fly to the equation who, despite only being 27 has been wrestling for almost 14 years, and you have a team that is, if nothing else, full of surprises.

Beauty & The Beasts (Blue Demon Jr., Sexy Star, Big Ryk)

Sexy Star is fearless. She is a woman in a mans world choosing to fight for what she believes in, no matter what the odds. That fight included coming to Blue Demon Jr.’s aid when he was attacked by Chavo Guererro Jr.  She paid for her heroism with a steel chair to the head, but Sexy Star and Blue Demon Jr. would finally get their revenge on Chavo and his “amigo”.

Big Ryk has also found himself in the revenge game recently, after his lackeys The Crew turned on him. If Ryk were to align himself with Sexy and Demon, he may find two partners who would have his back instead of stabbing it.

These are just a few trios that could be made up from the ever-growing Lucha Underground roster. As more and more luchadors find their way to Lucha Underground, the combinations are endless. Join the conversation with your picks for trios with #LuchaTrios.
